Following a donation of 100,000 Oxford AstraVeneca vaccines from India and since Barbados launched its mass vaccination programme last month it is now the most vaccinated country in the Caribbean and holds the 11th position worldwide for doses administered per 100 people with more than 18% of the population receiving their first dose of the vaccine. While the first wave of vaccines were distributed to frontline workers, including those in the tourism sector, as well as the vulnerable population, all citizens over 18 are now eligible to receive their first dose of the vaccine. With Barbados’ vaccination rate, the country is likely to be fully vaccinated by summer.
To ensure widespread protection, the Government of Barbados has signalled its intent to obtain more doses of the COVID-19 vaccine for persons on the island, whether they are citizens or not, by the end of April or early May 2021. This means that travellers to the island who have not been vaccinated would be able to receive one or more doses while visiting Barbados.
